About This Story
Each night of Hanukkah, one more candle burns in your family's window — your real hanukkiah, painted from your photo — and each night is your family's own: the blessing, latke night and the great applesauce-or-sour-cream debate, dreidel for gelt, Bubbe and Zayde, a story from when you were small. And each day after, your child carries a little light out into their world, to the real people you name: a grandparent far away, a friend who moved, the new neighbor, the crossing guard. On the eighth night, every light they brought glows back across the town — and your child, standing beside the shamash, the helper candle that lights all the others, is the one who lit them.
The moment it lands
Each night, one more candle in your real hanukkiah, and one of your family's own moments — latkes, dreidel, the grandparents, a story from your childhood. Each day, your child carries a little light to a real person in their life. On the eighth night, every light comes back, glowing across the town. And your child stands beside the shamash — the helper candle that lights all the others.
Why it stays on the nightstand
Hanukkah the way your family keeps it, in your window, with your hanukkiah. Each night is one of your family's own moments; each day your child carries a little kindness to a real person in their life. On the eighth night every light comes back — and your child stands beside the shamash, the helper candle, without anyone needing to say why. A book to take out every year.
What it quietly teaches
