About This Story

A friendship is not inside you and it is not inside your friend -- it lives in the gap between you, it is made of small round fluff, and it eats crumbs. On the night a friendship seems to end -- a friend says it out loud, or a worry decides it all by itself -- a door appears behind the hanging sweatshirts, and down in a lantern-lit hall a Keeper hands over the lantern and the job: five Betweens need looking at tonight, and all five are yours. One never grew. One is being carried. One is eating out of your pocket. One is cracked. And one -- the one that hurts -- is curled up in the dust, and nobody in the world can tell from the outside whether it is finished or only sleeping. So you drop one crumb, and you find out.

The moment it lands

Four of the five troubles, your child will learn to spot on sight -- the friendship that was announced and never fed, the one they are carrying alone, the exciting one that is quietly eating out of their pocket, and the cracked one that no amount of playing will fix until somebody says the true thing. The fifth is the one that actually hurts, and this book refuses to fake it, because nobody alive can tell from the outside whether a friendship is over or only sleeping. What it hands over instead is the one thing that works: drop one crumb and find out. No speech required. Your child closes the book holding the lantern, with a name for all five troubles and a question worth asking at forty.

Why it stays on the nightstand

This book hands you and your child five names for five things that look absolutely identical from the outside -- and a question that ends most friendship arguments before they start: "is that one asleep, or is it cracked?" It is honest where these books usually are not. It says out loud that a friendship you are carrying alone should be set down, that the most exciting friend can be the one costing your child the most (and gives them a test they can run themselves), and that a fight only mends if both people say the true thing. And when it reaches the one that actually hurts, it refuses to fake an answer, because nobody can tell from the outside -- so it gives your child the only thing that works: drop one crumb and find out. No speech required.

What it quietly teaches

Relationship Skills: Building and maintaining healthy relationships: recognizing reciprocity, distinguishing supportive friendships from coercive ones, practicing repair after conflict, and understanding that relationships persist through absence
