About This Story
It is bedtime and the most important thing in the world is missing. So begins a hunt — under the blanket, in the toy box, in the laundry, in both shoes, in a coat pocket — and every wrong thing that turns up goes into the basket your child drags along behind them. Here is the part they will lose their mind over: the lovey is already in that basket, and on every single page they can see one ear poking out from under the pile while the hero cannot. Each new thing buries it a little deeper. The hunt is what hid it.
The moment it lands
It is bedtime and the most important thing in the world is missing. Here is the part your child will lose their mind over: it is in the basket they are dragging behind them, and on every single page one ear is poking out from under the pile while the hero has no idea. They will tell you. Loudly. Before you finish the line. And every wrong thing that turns up — the sock, the rubber duck, half a biscuit — goes in on top and buries it a bit further, so the hunt is quietly what hid it. Then the hunt runs out, they sit down on the floor the way they really do, and from down there they are finally eye to eye with the basket. Nobody gets told off. Expect to read it until you know it by heart, and to be corrected every time.
Why it stays on the nightstand
The hunt you run at 7pm, made into the story — and made funny. On every page your child can see what the hero cannot: one ear poking out of the basket they are dragging behind them. Every wrong thing they pull out goes in on top and buries it a little further, so the hunt is quietly what hid it. If you add a second toy it comes along as the sidekick, hunting in all the same places and ending up under the towel. Expect to be told where the missing one is on every page, loudly, before you have finished the line — and then to go back to page one and check.
What it quietly teaches
Self-Management: Staying with a search through mounting frustration — persistence built as a game rather than demanded as patience, with the giving-up moment fully allowed before any relief
